Overview: Auto Glass Repair
Auto glass shops repair or replace door glass, quarter glass, back glass with its defroster grid, sunroofs and glass roofs, and many fit windshields too. The windshield has its own category here. Side and back glass is usually tempered, so it bursts into small blunt cubes and gets replaced.
Break-ins keep these shops busy, and winter adds its own jobs. A car left overnight with an open window fills with snow. Scraping a frosted back window hard can cut defroster lines. Ask the shop to vacuum the door cavity too, because glass left on the regulator grinds for months.
Insurance works differently by province. In British Columbia, an ICBC glass supplier bills ICBC directly, while a shop outside that list has you pay first and claim the money back. In Manitoba, most glass claims start at a participating shop without a call to MPI. In most other provinces, a private insurer handles it.
Tint rules follow the glass. British Columbia doesn't allow added film on front side windows, and Quebec requires them to let most light through.

Cost of auto glass replacement in Canada

Frequently asked questions
Can I put tint film back on a new door window?
On the front side windows, it depends where you live. British Columbia doesn't allow added film there at all, though glass tinted at the factory is fine. Quebec requires front side windows to let most light through. Ontario bans film there that substantially obscures the inside of the car from outside, but its law sets no figure. Ask the shop what it will put back before it orders the glass.
Do I need a police report for a smashed window?
Ask your insurer before the glass gets fixed, because it sets the rules. In Manitoba, MPI wants vandalism reported first: an online report to the Winnipeg Police Service inside Winnipeg, or a call to local police elsewhere. If anything was stolen, report that too, so you have the file number. Take photos of the damage and the inside of the door before the shop cleans up.
Does it matter whose glass they fit?
It can. Glass from the carmaker's supplier matches the shade, the tint band and the mounting points. Aftermarket panes range from excellent to slightly wavy near the edges, which shows most in a door window seen at an angle. On back glass, the defroster tabs have to line up too. In British Columbia, ICBC glass suppliers give a limited warranty on replacements, so ask what yours covers.
Will my heated rear window still work?
It should, because the defroster grid comes printed on the new glass. The shop reconnects the tabs at each edge. Turn it on before you pay and check that frost or fog clears evenly. On a car that lives outside, that grid earns its keep all winter. If a line fails on old glass, a repair kit can bridge the break. Scrape gently along the lines, never across them.
Should I claim on insurance for a smashed window?
It depends on your province and your coverage. Glass damage usually falls under comprehensive or all perils coverage, and your deductible decides whether a claim is worth making. In British Columbia, use an ICBC glass supplier and the shop bills ICBC directly. Pick another shop and you pay in full, then send the invoice to ICBC for reimbursement.
