By March, plenty of Canadian wheels look tired. Salt has crept under the clear coat at every chip, the bead seat has started to pit, and a pothole hidden under slush has put a flat spot in the lip. A wheel shop fixes the wheel itself. It straightens bends, welds cracks where a weld is safe, and strips and refinishes the face.
Many drivers here run two sets of wheels, and that changes the job. Steel winter wheels take the salt, so the alloys you care about come off in the fall. Spring changeover is the smart moment to get a bent or corroded alloy looked at, since it's off the car anyway. Quebec requires winter tires through the cold months, and British Columbia requires them on most of its highways, so the swap isn't optional for a lot of people.
In Ontario, a wheel shop follows the same repair rules as any garage. It can't charge you unless you got a written estimate or set a maximum price in writing.

Should my alloys come off for the winter?
Many drivers here do exactly that, and it's the cheapest wheel repair there is. A set of steel wheels takes the salt and the curbs hidden under snowbanks, while the alloys sit clean in storage. If your car has tire pressure sensors, the winter set needs its own, or the warning light stays on all season. Wash the alloys before you store them, because salt left on them keeps working.
When is a wheel not worth repairing?
When a crack runs through a spoke, around the lug holes or across the hub, the wheel is scrap. The same goes for a rim bent in two planes. Salt adds its own reason here. Once corrosion has pitted the bead seat deeply, the tire will keep losing air in the cold however well the seat is cleaned. A shop that tells you so is doing you a favour.
What is a diamond-cut wheel and why does it matter?
It's an alloy whose face was cut bright on a lathe and sealed under a thin clear coat. Winter is hard on it. Brine gets in at the first chip, and the face turns white and blotchy underneath. Fixing it means another pass on a lathe, which removes metal each time. Plenty of owners here keep diamond-cut wheels for summer only, or have them painted a solid colour.
Powder coat or paint?
For wheels that face a Canadian winter, powder coat usually wins. It goes on thick and gets baked hard, so it stands up to salt and stone chips better than wet paint. The catch is prep. The tire and sensor come off and the wheel is stripped to bare metal. Paint makes more sense when you're matching one wheel to a factory colour and the other three are fine.
Can I claim pothole damage from the city?
Sometimes. In Toronto, the city requires your claim within ten days of the damage, and a pothole report to the city's service line doesn't count as a claim. The city can refuse to pay if it kept to the province's minimum maintenance standards for roads. Other municipalities run their own claims process, so call the clerk's office before the repair. Keep photos, the shop's estimate and the damaged parts.
