Overview: Radiator Repair

In Canada, the cooling system does two jobs. It stops the engine overheating in summer traffic, and it feeds the heater and defroster all winter. Lose coolant in January and you lose the ability to clear the windshield, which turns a leak into a safety problem.

The system covers the radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat, fans, cap and the heater core behind the dash. Salt and road grit attack the radiator from the front. The coolant mix matters here as well. With too much water in it, coolant can freeze, split a hose or crack the block.

If the gauge climbs, pull over, shut the engine off and call for a tow. In Ontario, a tow operator needs your written consent before hooking up, unless police direct the tow, and must disclose any interest in a shop it recommends. The repair itself carries a minimum warranty under Ontario's consumer law. If the repair fails in that window and going back isn't reasonable, the closest shop can fix it, and the original shop pays back what you were charged plus reasonable towing.

Our listings show what each radiator shop says on its own website, such as recoring, heavy truck work or same-day replacement. Choose your province and city to find one.

Frequently asked questions

What do I do when the temperature gauge climbs?

Get off the road and switch the engine off. Every extra kilometre hot is a gamble with the head gasket. Leave the cap alone until it cools, because the coolant is under pressure. In slow traffic, cranking the heater to full buys a little time. If you need a tow, CAA plans set a yearly limit on service calls, and tow distance depends on your membership level.

Where do radiators normally leak?

Most often at the seam where the plastic tank meets the aluminum core, which heat cycles eventually crack. Salt and grit then eat the fins and tubes from the front, and stones punch holes. Hose necks crack in the cold. Some vehicles run the transmission cooler through the radiator, and a leak there mixes coolant with transmission fluid, which is expensive fast.

What coolant mix do I need for a Canadian winter?

Usually an even mix of antifreeze and water, using the coolant type your owner's manual names. Pure water freezes and pure antifreeze protects less, so more isn't better. In the coldest regions, some shops set the mix a little richer. Ask for a freeze-point test in the fall. It takes a minute, and it's cheaper than a cracked block or a split radiator.

Why is my heater blowing cold air?

Low coolant is the first suspect, and it points to a leak. After that, a thermostat stuck open keeps the engine too cool to heat the cabin, an air pocket stops coolant reaching the heater core, or the core itself is clogged. A blend door stuck on cold can fool you too. Get it fixed before a cold snap, since the defroster depends on the same heat.

Could this be the head gasket instead?

It could be. Coolant vanishing without a puddle, sweet white smoke and bubbles in the overflow bottle all point to a gasket. So can a block that froze, which can crack internally and mimic the same signs. A combustion gas test on the coolant takes minutes. Ask for it before approving new parts, and remember that Ontario shops need your approval before a bill runs much past the estimate.
