Overview: Transmission Repair Shops
Winter gets blamed for a lot of Canadian transmission complaints, and sometimes it's innocent. Cold fluid makes an automatic shift firmly for the first few blocks, and that's normal. A slip under load, a flare between gears or a shudder at highway speed once the car is warm is a real fault. So is limp mode, where the computer holds one gear and lights up the dash.
Shops fix a real fault three ways. They rebuild your unit, swap in a remanufactured one, or fit a used unit from a wrecker. Pulling a trailer or a boat all summer works a transmission hard, so tell the shop how the vehicle gets used.
The rules around the repair follow your province. Ontario and Quebec both put a minimum legal warranty on repair work, and Alberta requires repair businesses to hold an AMVIC licence. On a vehicle still under factory warranty, a dispute with the maker can go to CAMVAP, a national arbitration program with no fees.
Transmission specialists are thinner on the ground than general shops. Our listings show what each one states on its own website, and the province and city lists below lead to the nearest ones.
Cost of transmission repair in Canada
Get the fault identified before choosing a rebuild or replacement. Compare complete installed packages for the same gearbox, including what happens if the unit fails under warranty. Passenger vehicles. The rebuild bracket covers conventional automatics; CVT, dual-clutch and specialised units require their own quote.

|---|---|---|
| Conventional automatic transmission rebuild | CA$1,500–4,500per transmission | Removal, teardown, agreed internal repairs and refitting; confirm extras. |
| External leak or line repair | Get an itemized quoteper confirmed fault | Identify the failed seal or line and whether removal is needed. An accessible line leak and a seal requiring transmission removal are different jobs. |
| Remanufactured replacement installed | Get an itemized quoteper matching unit | Specify unit, converter, core deposit, fluids and required programming.Gearbox code and the replacement package determine the complete installed cost. |
| Used transmission installed | Get an itemized quoteper matching unit | State donor mileage, compatibility and parts-versus-labour warranty.Condition, availability and warranty change the comparison with rebuilding. |

Frequently asked questions
Rebuild, remanufactured or used?
A rebuild fixes your own unit, so it's only as good as the tech doing it. A remanufactured unit is built to a standard, tested, and usually backed longer. A used unit from a wrecker is the cheap gamble. Make sure the paperwork says which one you got. Quebec invoices must state whether parts are new, used, remanufactured or refurbished, and Alberta shops need your consent before fitting rebuilt or salvage parts.
Why does a transmission diagnosis take so long?
Because one symptom can have several causes, and proving which one takes fluid checks, scan data and a road test. In winter a fault may only show on a cold start, so the vehicle might need to sit outside overnight. Ask what the diagnosis costs before it starts. In Alberta, if you ask for an estimate and the shop has to diagnose first, it must give you a maximum for that work.
What should the warranty actually say?
Get parts, labour to pull and refit the unit, and the time or distance limit in writing. Provincial law sets a floor, not a target. Ontario and Quebec both set a minimum on repairs, limited by time and distance. Ask for more than that on a transmission, and find out what voids it and whether shops in other provinces will honour it.
Will fresh fluid fix a transmission that slips?
Rarely. Slipping usually means worn clutch material, and new fluid can't put it back. Fluid still matters here. Towing through summer heat and idling in deep cold are both hard on it, and many owner's manuals list a severe service schedule for that kind of use. If a shop sells a flush as the cure for a slip, ask which test says so.
Can a transmission warranty fight with the maker go to arbitration?
Often, through CAMVAP. It's a program across Canada, with no fees, for disputes with a manufacturer about defects or how it applies the new vehicle warranty. It's for fights with the maker, not with a dealer or an independent shop. There are age and distance limits, and the arbitrator's decision is final. Read the eligibility rules before you apply.
