Overview: Car Tune-Up
Nobody sets points or adjusts a carburetor any more, but the word stuck. When a Canadian shop books a tune-up today, it usually means spark plugs, coils and filters, plus a proper look at why the engine runs rough. The engine computer handles timing and fuel mixture on its own.
Cold is what exposes a tired ignition system. A weak coil or a worn plug can idle happily through a mild fall, then leave you cranking in a parking lot on the first deep-cold morning. A block heater takes a lot of strain off the battery and starter. It won't hide a misfire.
Who does the work matters too. In Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, automotive service technician is a compulsory trade, so the person under your hood has to be certified or a registered apprentice. Elsewhere certification is voluntary, and a Red Seal shows a technician meets the interprovincial standard.
Our listings show what each shop states on its own website, including the certifications it names. The province and city lists below lead to shops in your area, and the fall rush starts with the first frost.
Cost of a car tune-up in Canada
“Tune-up” can describe different jobs. Ask for an itemized service list and compare spark plugs, filters and diagnostic work separately.
| Service | Estimated cost | Scope and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Performance or misfire diagnosis | CA$100–CA$200per authorized diagnostic hour · Confirm tax treatment | One authorized diagnostic labour hour for a stated fault; repairs and further investigation extra. |
| Spark-plug replacement, 4-cylinder | CA$120–CA$450per engine · Confirm tax treatment | Four specified plugs fitted to an accessible four-cylinder petrol engine; coils and diagnosis extra. |
| Spark-plug replacement, 6-cylinder | CA$180–CA$700per engine · Confirm tax treatment | Six specified plugs fitted; inline-six and V6 access costs differ. Coils and diagnosis extra. |
| Engine air-filter replacement | CA$25–CA$80per vehicle · Confirm tax treatment | Standard disposable engine-air filter supplied and fitted; performance filters excluded. |
What changes the price
- Number and type of spark plugs
- Access to plugs and condition of existing threads
- Confirmed faults versus manufacturer-scheduled items
Ask before you book
- Which parts and tests are included in your tune-up?
- Which items are due under my vehicle’s maintenance schedule?
- Are ignition coils or cleaning services supported by a specific finding?
Canadian context
Use your model’s kilometre and time schedule; a generic tune-up package is not a universal maintenance requirement.
Gasoline engines, including the gasoline engine in a hybrid. Diesel and battery-electric vehicles need different service scopes.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth plugging in the block heater?
On cold nights, yes. Natural Resources Canada says a block heater reduces the impact of cold starts and cuts the idling you'd otherwise do, and it suggests a timer so it switches on a couple of hours before you leave. Warm oil reaches the bearings faster and the starter has an easier job. If you're not sure your car has one, look for a plug tucked behind the grille.
Should I idle the car to warm it up in winter?
Not for long. Natural Resources Canada says excessive idling isn't an effective way to warm a vehicle, even in cold weather, and that driving it is the way to warm it up. Idling also leaves the rest of the car cold: wheel bearings, transmission and tires only warm up when they move. Clear the snow and ice off the glass first, then go.
Do Ontario and BC still test car emissions?
Not for a regular car. Ontario's Drive Clean and British Columbia's AirCare both ended for light vehicles, and the testing that's left mainly targets heavy diesel trucks. That doesn't make a check-engine light harmless. A misfire can still ruin a catalytic converter, and a shop can read the stored code in a few minutes before it turns into a bigger bill.
Why has my fuel economy dropped?
Winter explains a lot of it. A cold engine burns extra fuel until it warms up, short trips never get there, and remote starts add idling you don't count. Winter tires and wet snow add drag as well. If economy is still poor once summer comes, look further: a lazy oxygen sensor, a misfire you can't feel yet, a thermostat stuck open, or brakes dragging because salt has seized the slides.
Is a flashing warning light worse than a steady one?
Much worse. A steady light means a stored fault you should get read soon. A flashing one usually means an active misfire sending unburned fuel into the exhaust, which can cook the catalytic converter on a short drive. Pull over when it's safe. If you're a CAA member, a tow is part of the plan, though how far they'll take you depends on your membership level and your club.
Will new plugs fix a car that will not start?
Rarely. On a no-start, plugs are near the bottom of the list. Slow cranking on a frozen morning is usually the battery, since cold cuts the power it can deliver while thick oil makes the engine harder to turn. Normal cranking without the engine firing points at fuel, spark or a crank sensor. A single click points at the battery or a corroded cable end. Get the battery load-tested before you buy parts.
