Overview: Driveshaft & Axle Repair
Canadian roads are hard on a driveline. Frost heaves and spring potholes hammer the joints, and road salt eats the clamps that hold each rubber boot shut. Cold makes an old boot stiff, so it cracks sooner. Once it splits, slush and grit get into the grease and the joint wears from the inside.
The noises point to the part. A click on a tight turn in a parking lot is usually an outer constant velocity joint. A clunk when you shift into drive is often a universal joint. A shudder that shows up at one highway speed and fades above it can be a shaft out of balance or a tired centre bearing.
Pickups and four-wheel-drive SUVs keep many of these shops busy, because their shafts get built, shortened and balanced on machines most garages don't own. Provincial rules still cover the paperwork. An Ontario estimate has to say whether each part is new, used or reconditioned. Alberta repair businesses need an AMVIC licence, and you can look one up.

Cost of driveshaft repair in Canada
First establish which shaft or joint is causing the vibration. Compare a repair to your existing shaft with a complete installed replacement, using the same scope. Passenger cars and light trucks. A machine-shop quote for a shaft already removed does not cover removal and refitting on the vehicle.

Should I fix a clicking CV joint before winter?
Yes, if you can. A joint that clicks in October has already lost its grease, and it won't heal over the winter. The failure you want to avoid is a joint that lets go on a snowy shoulder, far from a shop. Spring is pothole season, when driveline shops fill up. A repair booked in the fall is usually quicker and a lot calmer.
Split boot: repack it or replace the shaft?
Catch it early and a shop can clean the joint, repack it and fit a new boot for far less than a shaft. Winter shortens that window, because salty slush gets in fast and scores the joint. If it's already noisy, you're buying a joint or a whole axle. Ask what you're getting. In Ontario the estimate must say whether parts are new, used or reconditioned, and a Quebec invoice has to state each part's condition.
What causes a vibration only at certain speeds?
Check the wheels before blaming the shaft. Swapping to winter tires means another balance job, and snow packed inside a rim can shake the car until it melts. If the shake stays after a thaw and a fresh wheel balance, look underneath. A worn universal joint, a centre bearing with perished rubber, or a shaft out of balance are the usual suspects. A shake that changes when you ease off the gas points to the driveline.
Where can I complain about a bad repair?
Start with the shop, and do it in writing so you have a record. After that, it depends on the province. Alberta's AMVIC licenses repair businesses and takes complaints about unfair practices, though not about workmanship. Quebec's Consumer Protection Act puts a legal warranty on car repairs, and the Office de la protection du consommateur takes complaints. Ontario's act sets a minimum parts and labour warranty too. British Columbia's Civil Resolution Tribunal hears smaller claims online.
How does a differential tell you it is failing?
It whines, and the pitch rises and falls with road speed, not engine revs. A howl only on or off the throttle usually means worn gears or a pinion bearing. A clunk as you change direction points to backlash or a spider gear. Winter adds one habit that kills them. Spinning one stuck wheel hard in a snowbank can cook the spider gears in an open differential, so rock the vehicle gently instead.
