Overview: Mechanic Shops
A general mechanic is the shop you call when the check-engine light comes on, the brakes start to grind, or a service is due and the dealer's quote made you wince. Most independent shops handle diagnostics, brakes, fluids, batteries, suspension and the small electrical faults that eat a whole day at a dealer.
Winter sets the calendar here. Shops get slammed twice a year when everyone swaps between winter and summer tires, and in Quebec winter tires are the law through the cold months. In Ontario you may get an insurance discount for running them, so ask. Salt does the slow damage. It seizes bolts, rots brake lines and chews the metal around suspension mounts, which is why so many drivers book a yearly oil spray.
Some provinces give estimates real teeth. Under Ontario's Consumer Protection Act, a shop can't charge you for repairs unless you got a written estimate or set a spending cap in writing. The final bill can only run a little over that without your OK. The trade is regulated too. In Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI, the person working on your car has to be certified or a registered apprentice.

What does a general mechanic actually do?
Most of what keeps a car on the road: diagnostics, brakes, fluids, batteries, cooling, suspension and the bulk of check-engine faults. In Canada, add the seasonal work. That means tire changeovers, a battery test before the first cold snap, block heaters in colder regions and a look underneath for salt damage. Transmission rebuilds, bodywork and glass usually go to specialists, and a good shop tells you so up front.
Independent shop or dealer?
Either can keep a car healthy. Dealers see one brand's recalls and service bulletins first. Independents usually charge less for labour and give you more choice on parts. If the car's still under the maker's warranty, the warranty booklet is your rulebook. It sets the service intervals and the records you'll need to show. So whoever does the work, keep every invoice with the date and the kilometres on it.
What should a written estimate include?
Parts and labour on separate lines, the diagnostic fee, and what happens if the shop finds more once the car is apart. Ontario and Quebec both back this with law. In Ontario the bill can't go much past the written estimate without your approval, and you can usually ask for your old parts back. In Quebec most repairs need an estimate, and waiving it only counts if you write the waiver out by hand and sign it.
Do certifications matter?
They're a starting point. In Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI, automotive service technician is a compulsory trade, so the tech needs a certificate or a registered apprenticeship. Elsewhere it's voluntary. A Red Seal means the tech met the interprovincial standard, and manufacturer training shows depth on one brand. Paper can't prove honest billing. Still, a shop that names its credentials online gives you something to check.
What does a CAA Approved Auto Repair sign mean?
It means the local CAA club has inspected the shop and recommends it. Most repairs done there carry the program's warranty, and you don't need a CAA membership to use one.
