Overview: Car Battery Replacement

A car battery rarely warns you. It turns over a bit slower for a few mornings, and then one January day you get a click and nothing else. In a Canadian winter, that morning comes sooner.

Cold works against you from both ends. A battery delivers less cranking power as it gets colder, while thick oil makes the engine harder to turn. The first deep freeze finds every weak battery in town. A block heater makes the engine easier to start, which takes load off the battery, but it doesn't charge anything.

A proper visit is short. The shop checks the state of charge, puts the battery under load, and makes sure the alternator is refilling it. A car that keeps going flat gets tested for something drawing power after the key is off. Stop-start cars need an AGM or EFB battery, usually registered to the car's computer after fitting.

In some areas, CAA clubs will also test and replace a battery wherever the car sits. Our listings show what each shop states on its own website about testing, fitting and warranties. The province and city lists below lead to battery services near you.

Frequently asked questions

Can CAA replace my battery where the car sits?

Often, yes. CAA runs a mobile battery service that tests the battery and replaces it on the spot, at the roadside, at home or at work. It isn't offered everywhere, so call your club first. For members, a test counts as a roadside service call unless you buy a battery. The old one is taken away for recycling when you do. Compare the price with a local shop's.

How long should a car battery last?

A few years is typical, and summer heat does more lasting harm than winter cold. Heat wears the plates, then the first cold snap asks for power that's gone. Cars parked outside all winter age their batteries faster. In Quebec, the Consumer Protection Act says goods must stay usable for a reasonable time, on top of any written warranty. A battery that dies young may still be the seller's problem.

Is a block heater or battery blanket worth it?

In the colder parts of the country, a block heater is standard kit. It warms the engine so it cranks faster and puts less strain on the battery. A battery blanket keeps the battery itself warmer, which helps it deliver power. Neither one charges anything. If the car sits outside for days at a stretch, a plug-in battery maintainer does more for the battery than either.

Can I fit a cheaper battery than the original?

Within limits. The size, terminal layout and hold-down have to match. The rating to watch here is cold cranking amps, which tells you how much power the battery delivers in hard cold. Meet or beat the maker's figure. Don't swap the AGM battery in a stop-start car for a plain flooded one, because it won't survive the charging cycles. A cheap battery that quits in February isn't cheap.

My battery keeps going flat. What now?

Don't just buy another one. A battery that keeps dying has a reason: something drawing power after the car is off, a charging system that isn't keeping up, or trips too short to refill it. Winter makes that last cause worse, with the heater, heated seats and rear defroster all pulling power. A shop finds a drain by measuring current with everything shut off and pulling fuses until the draw drops.

What is the safe way to jump start a car?

Both cars off. Red clamp to the dead battery's positive, red to the good positive, black to the good negative. The last black clamp goes on bare engine metal on the dead car, away from the battery. In deep cold, look at the battery first. If the case bulges or you can see ice, don't boost it, because a frozen battery can crack or burst. Let it thaw indoors or replace it.
