Overview: Car Wash
In most of Canada, a car wash is winter maintenance as much as a treat. Road salt and brine cling to the underbody, the brake lines and the wheel wells, and a wash with an underbody rinse is how you get them off between storms. The busiest days at any wash are the mild ones after a cold snap, when everyone has the same idea.
The format still matters. A tunnel pulls the car along a conveyor. An in-bay automatic moves around a parked car. A self-serve bay gives you a wand, which reaches the wheel wells well but is hard on bare hands in January. Touchless machines can't scratch, though they leave some bonded grime behind. Soft cloth cleans better if the cloth is kept clean.
There's a reason to skip the driveway, too. Toronto requires commercial car washes to treat their wastewater and send it to the sanitary sewer. Water from a driveway wash that reaches a catch basin runs untreated to rivers and the lake.

Frequently asked questions
Touchless or soft cloth?
Through the salt season, touchless has one advantage: nothing drags the grit off a winter road across your paint. Its weakness is the salty film and grime that chemicals alone won't lift. Soft cloth cleans better when the equipment is well kept and rinsed between cars. Plenty of drivers use touchless while the roads are white and switch to cloth once spring rain has washed the streets.
Is it safe to wash my car when it's below freezing?
Yes, and through the salt season it's worth doing. The risk is the water left behind, not the wash. Door seals, locks and mirrors can freeze once you're back outside, so pick a wash with a strong dryer and a heated bay. Wipe the door seals with a towel, work the doors and locks before you leave, and drive for a while before parking outside.
Are unlimited wash plans a good deal?
They pay off through the salt season, when a car wants washing often. Summer is a different sum. Before you sign up, check whether the plan includes the underbody rinse, whether it's tied to one licence plate, and how you cancel. Many plans bill your card every month until you stop them, so find out whether cancelling takes an app, a visit or a phone call.
Does the underbody rinse do anything?
Yes, and in most of Canada it's the part of the wash worth paying for. Salt and brine pack into frame rails, brake lines, fuel lines and wheel wells, and rust starts there well before a panel bubbles. A top-only wash never touches them. Oil-spray rust-proofing is common in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, and a regular underbody rinse between treatments keeps salt from sitting on the metal.
Why does my car look white again a day after washing?
Because the roads are still wet with brine. Once it dries on the paint it leaves a white haze, and a short drive on a salted highway puts it straight back. That doesn't mean the wash failed. The salt you can't see, under the car, is the part that matters, so keep paying for the underbody rinse and save the full clean for a dry day.
