Case Study: 2017 Audi S6 Rear Differential Failure Recently, we encountered a costly repair with a 2017 Audi S6. The vehicle suffered from a rear differential breakdown, leading to severe metal grinding noises and limited mobility. Despite Audi's claims of "Lifetime fluid" that supposedly never needs changing, our findings suggest otherwise. 🔧 Breakdown Details: Symptom: Audible grinding/scratching noise from the rear. Diagnosis: Rear differential failure, with no visible damage to drivetrain components. The noise was traced back to the differential assembly. Repair Challenge: Audi provides no repair parts for the differential. The only solution was replacing the entire unit, costing the client $13,785 and a three-week wait for delivery from Germany. 📸 Inside Look: We disassembled the old unit and discovered a blown bearing and significant wear indicated by metal shavings—clear signs of inadequate fluid maintenance. 💡 Takeaway: This incident underscores the importance of regular fluid service, regardless of manufacturer recommendations. The failure occurred at just 90,000 km, shortly after the powertrain warranty expired. 🛠 Advice: Don't wait for a breakdown! Regular checks and maintenance can save you from unexpected and expensive repairs. Let’s keep your ride smooth and sound!
