Overview: Auto Locksmiths
Lock yourself out in January and you've got two problems at once: the car and the cold. A locksmith who opens cars for a living gets in without bending the door or tearing the seals. A good one can also thaw a frozen lock without snapping your key in it.
Losing every key is a bigger job. Canada has required electronic immobilizers on new cars for many years, so a freshly cut blade won't start anything built in that time. The new key has to be programmed to the car, and that takes equipment and software for your make. Ask about it on the phone, and ask for the total price.
Some provinces license this trade. In British Columbia and Alberta, locksmiths need a provincial licence, and Alberta has a separate licence for people who open locked cars. British Columbia's law leaves out the locks on cars, although cutting a key from a code still counts. Licence holders in both provinces have to carry the card while they work, so asking to see it is fair.
Expect to show your vehicle permit and photo ID before anyone cuts a key. Our listings show what each locksmith says on its own website about lockouts, cutting and programming. The province and city lists lead to businesses that cover your area.

Ask whether taxes are included.
Frequently asked questions
What should I have ready when I call?
Your make, model and year, where the car is parked, and whether any working key is left. Say if it has push-button start, because that changes the kit. Have your vehicle permit and photo ID ready. In a cold snap, mention whether the lock is frozen or jammed. A locksmith who knows before leaving can bring what thaws a lock instead of forcing it.
Can a key be made with no key at all?
Yes, on nearly any car. Because new cars here must have an immobilizer, the job comes in two parts. First the blade is cut from a code or by reading the lock. Then the chip or remote is programmed so the engine agrees to start. A few makes release that data only through a dealer, which can add days. Ask about your make when you call.
Locksmith or dealer for a lost key?
A locksmith, most of the time. The dealer needs the car on its lot, and a winter tow on top of the key bill hurts. A locksmith comes to you and often finishes the same day. The dealer makes sense when your make allows only dealer programming, or when a lock fault is still under warranty. In Alberta, or for a key cut from a code in British Columbia, check the licence card before work starts.
Do auto locksmiths need a licence in Canada?
It depends on the province. British Columbia and Alberta license locksmiths under their security services laws, and Alberta has its own licence for opening locked cars. British Columbia's law leaves out car locks, but cutting a key from a code still needs a licence. A licensed locksmith there has to carry the card on the job, so ask to see it. Other provinces set their own rules. Wherever you are, ask how long they've worked on cars and whether they carry insurance.
Will a new fob battery fix a dead key?
Often. Coin cells lose power fast in deep cold, so a fob that works in a warm garage can quit in a parking lot at dawn. Try a fresh battery first. If nothing changes, warm the fob in your pocket and try again. A fob that still won't talk to the car may have lost its pairing after the car battery died. That's a programming visit.
