This week I lost my Grandma; Josephine FischtnernnIf you knew grandma you likely enjoyed her mouth watering baking, she was not only talented in the kitchen; she was generous to a fault with her sweet treats and European cuisine. Her joy in the kitchen doubled with every tray of cookies she gave away. What you may not know is the incredible journey that was this resilient woman's life.nnBorn in Yugoslavia under communist rule, her only hope at a future different from her parents was to flee her country. On foot, in the middle of the night she ran to neighbouring Austria. Leaving behind all she knew and loved was a sacrifice she had to make in order to survive. In Austria she met her husband George, and his son George Jr and together they immigrated to Canada where they had 3 more children. Her first born child in Yugoslavia was also a woman of great strength and soon Jean travelled across the ocean to meet her new family. Coming to Canada with hope in their hearts and not a word of English in their vocabulary, life was a challenge in every aspect. They worked hard, set roots and found a soft place to land in a small community of close friends from home. When grandma lost her youngest daughter; Carol, in a tragic car accident it changed who she was. She persevered, her therapy came in the form of a bountiful garden and her warm over flowing kitchen; both from which she nourished her family and found calm in her heart.nnRest in Peace has a much deeper meaning for grandma then it might for most of us, the peace she sought is something many of us take for granted. The peace she leaves is in the kindness and understanding I see in my Dad's eyes .
