An RV in Canada spends most of the year parked in the cold, and that shapes the work. Every fall the water system has to be drained or filled with RV antifreeze before the first hard frost. Every spring someone has to flush it, test the propane and find out what the winter cracked.
The trade here has a proper name. Recreation vehicle service technician is a Red Seal trade in every province. It covers the house side: plumbing, propane, appliances, electrical systems, and the frames and running gear of trailers. It stops at engines and drivetrains, so a motorhome may still need a truck shop for the chassis.
Propane is regulated work. In Ontario, servicing a propane appliance in an RV takes a certificate from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. Other provinces run their own gas rules, so ask who on the team holds the right ticket.

Frequently asked questions
Can a regular garage work on an RV?
For the chassis, often yes. The engine, brakes, tires and suspension on a motorhome are truck work, as long as the bay door is tall enough. The house side is a separate trade. RV technicians train on propane, plumbing, appliances and slide rooms, and their trade stops where the drivetrain starts. Plenty of owners use a truck shop and an RV shop, and that's normal.
Does my travel trailer need its own licence plate?
In Ontario, yes. Any trailer towed on a public road has to be registered and plated first, whether it's for work or for fun. Homemade trailers count too. The good news is that you only register a trailer once, because the registration doesn't expire. Other provinces run their own registries, so check yours before the first trip.
What does winterizing actually involve?
Getting every drop out of the plumbing before a Canadian freeze finds it. Drain the fresh tank and water heater, bypass the heater, then blow out the lines or pump in antifreeze made for drinking-water systems. Pour some into each trap. Empty and rinse the holding tanks. Take the battery out or keep it on a maintainer, because a flat battery can freeze and crack.
Who should touch the propane and the appliances?
In Ontario, someone holding the right certificate from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. Its RV propane certificates cover furnaces, fridges and water heaters in trailers and motorhomes, plus the regulators and lines that feed them. Other provinces set their own gas rules, so ask the shop who is certified before work starts. A home furnace company is the wrong call for an RV fridge.
Is RV technician a certified trade in Canada?
