Overview: Flat Tire Repair

A flat in Canada is rarely just a nail. Cold air drops tire pressure overnight, frost-heaved roads and spring potholes cut sidewalls, and salt corrodes the rim where the tire seals. A slow leak that only shows up in a cold snap is often the wheel, not the tire.

A proper repair is done from the inside. The shop takes the tire off the rim, checks the liner, and installs a plug and patch together. Only the tread area can be fixed. Sidewall and shoulder damage mean a new tire, and so does a tire that was driven flat.

The calendar matters here. Quebec requires winter tires on passenger vehicles through the cold months, and British Columbia requires winter or mud and snow tires on most highways from fall to spring. A damaged winter tire can't wait for a quiet week, and shops fill up fast in changeover season.

Our listings show what each tire shop says on its own website about puncture repair, mobile service and hours. Choose your province, then your city, to find help nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my tires lose air when it gets cold?

Mostly physics. Air contracts as it cools, so a tire set correctly on a mild fall afternoon reads low after the first hard frost. Check pressure cold, before driving, and set it to the placard on the driver's door jamb, not the figure on the sidewall. A tire that keeps dropping after you've topped it up has a real leak, often corrosion where the bead meets an alloy rim.

Plug, patch, or both?

Both, as one piece fitted from inside. The stem fills the hole so brine can't reach the steel belts and rust them, and the patch seals the liner. That means the tire comes off the rim, which is also how the shop sees hidden damage. A plug pushed in from outside at the roadside gets you to a shop. On salted roads, we wouldn't trust it for a whole winter.

Does sealant in a can cause problems?

It makes the repair messier. The goo coats the inside of the tire, and the shop has to clean it off before a patch will stick. Some brands can foul the pressure sensor in the valve. Cold is the other catch. Sealants have a working temperature range, so read the can before you count on it in January. And tell the shop you used it before they break the bead.

My car has no spare. What now?

If the hole is small and in the tread, the sealant kit may get you moving. If not, call for a tow instead of driving on the flat. CAA memberships cover a limited number of service calls a year, and tow distance depends on your plan. In Ontario, a tow operator needs your written consent before towing, unless police direct the tow, on a form that shows its maximum rates.

Is a patched winter tire still safe for winter?

A proper tread repair doesn't change what the tire is, so a patched winter tire is still a winter tire. What matters more is the tread left. Winter grip fades as the tread wears down, and British Columbia sets a minimum tread depth for tires used on its winter routes. If the tire is close to worn out, put the repair money toward a new one instead.
