Overview: Mobile Mechanics
A mobile mechanic fixes the car where it's parked: your driveway, the lot at work, the spot behind your building. You skip the tow and the waiting room. The van shows up packed for the problem you described on the phone, so describe it well.
In Canada the weather sets the calendar. The first hard frost brings a rush of no-start calls, because cold finds every tired battery. Spring and fall bring the tire swap. If your winter tires already sit on their own rims, that swap is a driveway job. Putting new rubber on a rim takes a shop machine. In Quebec, winter tires are the law through the cold months, so that fall visit isn't optional there.
Salt is the slow enemy. It seizes bolts and rots brake lines, and a bolt that won't budge in a January driveway can turn a quick job into a shop job. A good mobile tech tells you that before starting, not halfway through.
Our listings show what each business states on its own website, including coverage area, hours and emergency calls. The province and city lists below lead to mobile mechanics in your area. Check the travel radius before you book.
Frequently asked questions
What can be done at my house, and what cannot?
Batteries, brakes, starters, alternators, belts, sensors and most diagnostics all suit a driveway. So does swapping winter wheels that are already mounted on rims. Mounting and balancing tires, exhausts, clutches and alignments need a hoist or a machine bolted to the floor. Deep cold adds its own limit. Salted fasteners and early dark push some jobs into a heated bay, and an honest tech says so on the phone.
Can a mobile mechanic give me a safety certificate in Ontario?
Only if the business holds the licence. In Ontario, a Safety Standards Certificate comes from a Vehicle Inspection Centre licensed by the Ministry of Transportation. You need one to plate most used cars that change hands, and it isn't a warranty. A mobile pre-purchase check at the seller's curb is still money well spent. Private sellers also have to give you a Used Vehicle Information Package.
What if the car needs a workshop after all?
It happens more in winter, when a seized bolt or a job that needs a hoist ends the driveway visit. Agree before the van comes who pays for the diagnosis if the car has to go in. If you're a CAA member, your plan may cover the tow. How far it goes depends on your membership level and your club, and the number of service calls is capped each year.
Is a battery test before winter worth booking?
Usually, yes. Cold thickens engine oil and cuts the power a battery can deliver, so a weak one that started fine in the fall gives up on the first bitter morning. A mobile tech can load-test it in your driveway and swap it on the spot if it fails. Ask which battery they carry and whether it has the cold-cranking rating your car calls for.
How do I check a mobile mechanic's trade certificate?
In Ontario, look them up on the Skilled Trades Ontario public register. Automotive service technician is a compulsory trade there, so anyone working in it needs a certificate or a registered training agreement, and their name has to appear. Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI also make the trade compulsory. Elsewhere it's voluntary, and a Red Seal is a good sign.
Where can they park to work on the car?
Somewhere flat, hard and legal, with room for a jack and both doors open. A driveway beats the street. Condo parking may be off limits under the building's rules, so ask the board first. In winter, clear the snow before the van arrives, and watch the street during snow clearing. In Montreal, a car left in the way usually gets towed to a nearby street and the owner is fined.
